318 miles of glory await April 21, 2006
Posted by Patrick in : Travel, Friends, Cycling , 8 commentsDespite better judgment, my roommate Walt and I will attempt the DC to Pittsburgh bike trek this weekend (+ Monday). It’s 318 miles in all. Here’s the plan:
- Our friend Bethany who’s visiting from Thurmont, MD will drive us to Rockville, MD so we can pick up the metro. Since she has to work tomorrow (Saturday), we’re leaving Pittsburgh around 4 AM. We’ll take the metro to Union Station and hopefully do this route to get to the trail head. Crossing the white house lawns might be a challenge
- We plan to muscle 100 miles on Saturday which will take us to Williamsport, MD. Bethany will meet us for a late dinner at one of the delectable restaurants around the area. The Red Roof will protect us from the elements this night since it’s only a mile from the trail. 218 miles to go.
- The next day will be another 100 miles which will take us to Frostburg, MD. This is when we start to climb the perilous Mount Savage. From the chart, it looks like we’ll need to climb about 2000 ft within 10 miles. I think that’s only a 3.8% grade. Is that right? (2000/52800)
- The last day will be the big 118 mile leg. It’s all downhill from here.
Hopefully, I will post photos in the days to come. The only thing that will stop us will be the weather. It’s supposed to be pretty yucky down in DC this weekend. Till then!
