Waiting for the UPS truck December 24, 2005
Posted by Patrick in : Photography , 5 commentsI had a few things ordered at B&H to my workplace for the wedding that I’m shooting for on Tuesday. Unforunately, since we had off yesterday, I had to drive out to New Stanton to pick up the package. While I was waiting for the truck to make its way back, there was a beautiful sunset. The horizon itself was pretty plain, so this is probably one of my better shots of the evening.

Improvement of the poor December 19, 2005
Posted by Patrick in : Photography , 2 commentsAfter Ben & Megan’s Christmas party last Friday night, I wandered down to the Strip district with my camera. The billboard and building caught my eye. Since it was pretty late, I had to shoot the building at an ISO of 3200. The white balance gave the building a reddish glow. I later tinted the photo in Picasa.
PS Hey check this out. It’s pretty cool. Just type something in your browser.
Fotos as fodder
Posted by Patrick in : Photography , 7 commentsNow with the recent acquisition of the Canon 20D, I’m going to attempt a photoblog. My hope is that the camera and this blog will encourage me to get out and take more photos. It’s something I’ve always loved doing, but never find the time to do.
As you can tell from the footer, I’m still using wordpress with the theme Nigiri Shushi. Flickr hosts my photos. Unfortunately, my knowledge of PHP and CSS is basically nil, so it’s not that versatile right now. Not to mention that some parts look pretty sloppy. I’m hoping to clean the blog up and add some features in the future.
This inaugural photo was taken by me as I was driving home from the annual family Christmas brunch. And since pasture (albeit snowy pasture) is something I don’t see enough, I put on the four-ways and pulled off to the side of the road. At first, I thought the road was little travelled. Four frowns and a middle finger later told me that it’s a bit more busy than I first thought.
Google music & Google Pittsburgh? December 16, 2005
Posted by Patrick in : Pittsburgh, Music , 3 comments
Google yet again adds more functionality to their web service. They have now entered the music realm. Sort of. Now when querying a music artist, discography and other related info is now organized for your perusing pleasure. I can see this being extremely helpful.
And did you hear Google is moving to Pittsburgh? Or at least a very small part of them. They’re opening a research facility around CMU that will staff about a 100 people. I think this will be near Apple’s office. Hopefully the visibility of these two innovative companies will foster new growth in the area. It has always been a bummer to think about all the bright minds that go to CMU that have to leave Pittsburgh because of the lack of jobs in the area.

Busy with the 20D December 14, 2005
Posted by Patrick in : Photography, Software , 4 commentsThe 20D is a jealous camera. Very jealous of bloggers and their time. Time that used to be spent pondering the mysteries of the universe and documenting the answers on this here website is now invested in capturing the mysteries of my room and capturing them on this here computer.
And with free time at a premium, I’ve had only a little bit of time here and there to experiment with the camera. So far, I’m quite pleased with it.
A question, as far as RAW goes…Does anyone know any good software that handles the Canon RAW format (disregarding Photoshop) ? The images on my camera have a .cr2 extension. Unfortunately, I can’t find any GIMP plugin right now. I think the later versions of Photoshop Elements may handle it. Version 2.0 (it’s at 4.0 currently) came with the camera. Picasa handles them. Although a slick program, it doesn’t seem that versatile.
Any other ideas?
Would you like cheese with your doctrine? December 10, 2005
Posted by Patrick in : Christianity, Reading , 1 comment so farDoes doctrine produce cold, stodgy people? Alissa quotes a good passage from John Piper. And he confesses that it does, if it’s divorced from emotion. Which I guess springs from an understanding of God’s grace. However, he also suggests that emotion without truth is shallow worship at best. This last part touches on a thought I’ve been chewing on for a few weeks now. I don’t want to write it about it now, but I may revisit it in the near future.
Jesus declared, “Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.”
